The Benefits of using a Facial Serum

So why use a facial serum?

We all know that plenty of sleep, being safe in the sun, a healthy diet and lifestyle can keep our skin in good condition from the inside – but can we do anything from the outside to keep those wrinkles at bay?

For those with an interest in skin care, you will already be aware that there is a world of different treatments and products all promising different miracles. Where do we start?

A good skin care routine is essential. Our skin is a living organ – our largest organ – and supplying it with essential nutrients and moisture is paramount, as well as keeping it clean and free of harmful chemicals. No matter what your skin type, nor what your preferred routine is; from soap and water to cleanse, tone and moisturize – there is a serum out there that will benefit your skin.

So what is a serum and do we need to use one? What’s the difference between a serum and a moisturizer?

The structure of molecules in a serum is generally smaller than that of a moisturizer, which allows the serum to penetrate deeper than a regular moisturizer. Serums can deliver vitamins, active naturals and antioxidants deep into the skin. Many are used overnight, which is the best time as this is when the skin heals and repairs itself.

Serums are generally lighter in texture than moisturizers. They may also have a higher level of active ingredients compared to their moisturizer counterparts. Always look for natural ingredients as they are kinder to the skin.

Here are some of the best to look out for –

Limnanthes Alba Seed Oil

limnanthesMeadowfoam flower oil is derived from the seeds of a white flower which has 98% long chain fatty acids. This oil hassuperior moisturising and conditioning properties and is emollient but not greasy.

Oenothera Biennis Oil

oenotheraEvening Primrose Oil is a rich source of gamma linoleic acid (GLA) derived from essential fatty acids (EFAs). This helps to maintain the moisture barrier of the skin and it soothes and protects dry skin. EFAs manufacture prostaglandins, which are responsible for maintaining the tone of blood vessels and balance of water levels in the body.

Triticum Vulgare Germ Oil

Wheat Germ Oil is extracted from the germ of the wheat kernel and is a naturally abundant source of vitamins A, D and E. It also contains fatty acids and plant sterols. This oil has a softening and conditioning effect on skin and is thought to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Triticum Vulgare Seed Extract

Wheat Seed Extract contains ceramides and glycosylceramides, which help to replenish the skin. It has anti-elastase, anti-collagenase and anti-free radical activity and acts against skin aging.

Rosa Canina Fruit Oil

rosacaninaRosehip oil is a cold pressed vegetable oil which is extracted from the seeds of a wild rose which grows in the Andes. It is unique among vegetable oils in containing retinol (vitamin A) and vitamin C. This oil is high in essential fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid (omega-6) and linolenic acid (omega-3). It is thought to reduce the size of pores and is good for skin infections due to its high level of vitamin A. Rosehip oil is rich in antioxidant tocopherols and is used to heal scarring and diminish photo-ageing caused by exposure to excessive sunlight. The essential fatty acids help to maintain the moisture barrier of the skin and soothe and protect dry skin.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant found most abundantly in wheat germ oil, sunflower and safflower oils. It is an effective antioxidant and free radical scavenger and protects the skin from environmental damage. It accelerates healing in burns and reduces scar formation.

Retinyl Palmitate

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin which improves the appearance of mature, sun damaged and dry skin. It hydrates and softens skin and helps to recreate a smooth, supple texture and tone. It protects the skin from damage caused by free radicals.

Butyrospermum Parkii Butter

Shea Butter is composed of fatty acids which melt at body temperature making it an ideal emollient for skin, without leaving a greasy feeling. It nourishes the skin with vitamins A and E, helping to maintain the skin. It is good for sun damaged skin as it has a high level of cinnamic acid, which acts a natural sun screen. Shea butter has anti-inflammatory, emollient and humectant properties. The high content of unsaponifiables and allantoin in shea butter combines to yield its soothing and protective properties.

serumFace The World has developed a natural skin care range, including an anti-aging, overnight skin-booster serum with ALL of the above ingredients in it.

“We included the serum in our range, even though it isn’t a direct part of the facial massage experience. The benefits of using a serum to enhance your daily skin care are too important to ignore.”
