… and here they are…

We asked each of our FTW Practitioners a set of revealing questions about what makes them tick – and advice for other ambitious therapists who want to grow their business:

Winner – Melanie Warren – Relaxology, Orpington, Kent

Tell us a little bit about you; where are you based and what do you love most about your business?

Melanie WarrenMy interest in holistic therapies began almost 20 years ago when reflexology started my recovery from a long term illness. It developed to a passion 8 years ago when I was inspired to train, firstly in reflexology, and then massage and aromatherapy. I founded Relaxology and have been working full time ever since. I care passionately about people’s well-being and feel that time is precious and if someone uses their time to come to me for a treatment, then I need to make them feel marvellous when they leave!

I had been searching for an exceptional facial and as soon as I heard about Face The World I knew it was what I was looking for. There is nothing else like it anywhere! I have been enthusiastic about it right from the start and have many clients who absolutely love it. The skin care is divine and the facial routine is a delight with the amazing music. I also do many Face The World eastern acupressure face, neck and scalp massages which are greatly enjoyed by my clients also. I always enjoy doing these treatments and love to introduce them to other therapists to enhance what they can offer to their own clients. I love working with the lovely music and the smells of the products from Face The World and never tire of the music even though I have heard it so often for years now. It’s still a pleasure and relaxes me too!

I have a purpose built treatment suite attached to our home in Orpington. My clients say they feel calm and peaceful as soon as they walk in, so I think it works! I absolutely love my work. It’s such a privilege to be able to help and treat people who are often stressed, vulnerable or feeling ill when they arrive and to see them relaxed and de-stressed, calmer, when they leave, is very rewarding.

How did you feel when you found out you were a winner?FTW POTY winner

It was so exciting to be a national finalist in the Practitioners of the Year 2015, and when I had the phone call to tell me I had won I was utterly stunned. I really never saw it coming and it is just so exciting. It means the world to me, because I have worked hard for years to build my business and reputation and now I feel recognition for it all. You don’t get an appraisal when you work for yourself, so this accolade is been a massive boost to my confidence, and the fantastic testimonials my lovely clients wrote about me really made me cry. I didn’t realise I made such a difference and I am so glad to know.

Give us an example of who a perfect client for you might be?

For me, the perfect client is someone who allows themselves the space and time to switch off and relax. It is very flattering that they feel safe enough to just be, either to rest and daydream, or go to sleep. When someone has taken time out of their busy life and is spending hard earned cash, it’s good to know I have enabled them to stop, unwind and let go.

What tip would you give others considering starting up in the holistic/beauty industry?

Aha MomentFor other practitioners thinking of starting up in the holistic industry I would say take your time and research the treatments you want to offer. Experience the treatments yourself and see how they make you feel. Be aware of the things that you didn’t like as much as those you do like. Always remember that the client is giving their own free time, as well as money, to choose to come to you, and treat them, the way you would want to be treated yourself – every time. You won’t go wrong then!

And keep having regular treatments yourself for two reasons: to de-stress and relax after all the hard work looking after others and, just as importantly, to remind yourself just how wonderful it feels to lie there and have that facial. This will mean that that you are renewed and enthused to return to your clients and make their treatments amazing.

2nd Place – Hayley Pearson, Serenity Touch, Great Moulton, Norwich, Norfolk

Tell us a little bit about you; where are you based and what do you love most about your business?

Hayley PearsonHi, I am Hayley, a Complementary Therapist based in a small village called Great Moulton in South Norfolk. I have been practising for 9 years and offer a variety of therapies that range from bodywork ones to energy based treatments. I trained in my various therapies after suffering ill health after the birth of my children.

The therapies I tried helped me out so much I decided to retrain so I would able to help other people out who may be suffering similar issues to myself. I love what I do and to be able to have someone come into my therapy room feeling stressed and in pain and then leave with a smile on their face feeling better than they did when they arrived, is a wonderful feeling and makes work not difficult to want to do!

I offer many therapies along with teaching the Face The World courses and Reiki courses. I regularly hold and host workshops that anyone can attend such as Sound Baths, numerology and tarot tasters.

Give us an example of who a perfect client for you might be?

The idea of the perfect client is someone who comes to me to try complementary therapies who hasn’t experienced any before. To be able to open their mind and body to what can be achieved through holistic therapies like the Face the World Holistic Facial or Reiki and bodywork ones like massage is a wonderful gift that I can work with and help others.

What tip would you give others considering starting up in the holistic/beauty industry?
Aha MomentThe tip I would give anyone considering starting up in this business is to follow your heart. You need to love what you do and enjoy helping others. Any therapist you meet will always wish to help you on your journey and there is no competitiveness from other practitioners as everyone needs advice and help when starting out.

Joint 3rd Place – Lizzie Johns, Just Bea Holistic Therapies, Kesgrave, Suffolk

Lizzie JohnsI live in Kesgrave, Suffolk and have worked as an Holistic Therapist for the last 14 years. I have just expanded and set up my own clinic. I love the FTW facial. I love everything about it, the products, the music, the routine, the mask never fails to amuse me. When I place an order I love the little hand written note that comes with it or the heart!!!

Little things please me! I was completely overwhelmed when phoned to say I was 3rd – I did have a little cry afterwards!

Give us an example of who a perfect client for you might be?

A perfect client for me is all of my clients. I have the best clients in the world to be honest. They love it when I train in something new!

What tip would you give others considering starting up in the holistic/beauty industry?

Aha Moment

My advice to practitioners new in the business is to persevere. Do something a little bit different. A good therapist is one that listens to their clients. Read between the lines of what they are saying. Make that time that they have with you all about them!

Joint 3rd Place – Jenny Diment, Pure Bliss, Maidstone, Kent

Jenny DimentI run a home based holistic & beauty therapy room in Maidstone Kent, which has grown considerably over the last several years. I love working from home as it gives me the flexibility with my family. What I love most about my business is that it continues to develop holistically to really help my clients physically, mentally & spiritually. When I found out I was a winner it made my day, month & year. I love FTW and have a real passion for it, so I was Super Proud that my passion showed to my clients who took the time to vote for me. Feel very blessed.

Give us an example of who a perfect client for you might be?

The perfect client!! hard question, as I would like to think all my clients are unique to me in many ways.  I love to treat people that are open to trying new treatments and also will come and switch off relax and be pampered without having the need to talk all the way through their treatments.  This is where FTW is great at making the client completely zone out.

What tip would you give others considering starting up in the holistic/beauty industry?

Aha MomentIf you’re considering starting up in the industry, success comes to those who have a passion and love what they do.  Only take up treatments that you really enjoy.  Prepare to be flexible and patient.  Hard work does pay off if you love your job.

I’m sure you agree with us what amazing practitioners they are – and the key ingredient running through them all? Being passionate about what they do and their love for the industry! Sound like you?
